Your business doesn't stand still—neither should your IT infrastructure. As Bristol businesses upgrade their technology, desktops, towers, monitors, and servers pile up. Some get stored in cupboards. Others end up in the skip. Both options create risk.

Simply deleting files isn't enough. Formatting a hard drive leaves recoverable data. And fly-tipping electronics violates WEEE regulations and exposes your business to liability. When it comes to computer disposal, you need a partner who understands data security, environmental compliance, and Bristol's business landscape.

Basecamp Tech provides free collection of old computers and IT equipment across Bristol, with certified data destruction and responsible recycling. We handle everything—from your initial enquiry to your certificate of disposal—so you can focus on running your business.

What We Collect

We accept all types of computer equipment and peripherals. No item is too small or too large:

The Problem with DIY Computer Disposal

Did you know? Formatting a hard drive or using "erase" functions does not permanently delete data. With the right tools, deleted files can often be recovered—potentially exposing your business data, client information, or financial records.

When it comes to disposing of old computers, DIY approaches pose three major risks:

1. Data Security Risk

Hard drives and SSDs retain recoverable data even after "deletion" or factory resets. Multiple independent studies — including well-known research by Blancco and Ontrack — have consistently shown that a substantial proportion of second-hand drives sold online still contain recoverable personal or business data. If old computers end up on the used market or in landfills, your proprietary information, client details, or financial data could be exposed. For businesses handling GDPR-regulated data, this is a compliance nightmare.

2. Legal & Compliance Risk

Fly-tipping or informal disposal of electronic waste breaches the Environmental Protection Act and WEEE Regulations. Your business is legally responsible for ensuring e-waste is disposed of properly. Without certification, you have no proof of compliance. For regulated industries (finance, healthcare, legal), this could trigger fines, reputational damage, or audit failures.

3. Environmental Risk

Computers contain hazardous materials—lead, mercury, cadmium, and rare earth elements. Sending them to general waste or overseas "recycling" schemes damages the environment and often exploits workers in developing countries. Responsible recycling protects Bristol's community.

How Our Computer Disposal Service Works

We've simplified the process into five straightforward steps:

1

Get in Touch

Contact us via email, WhatsApp, or phone. Tell us what you're disposing of and where you're based in Bristol.

2

Free Collection

We'll arrange a convenient time and collect your old computers and equipment at no charge. Josh or a trusted collection partner does the heavy lifting — you always know who's turning up.

3

Secure Data Wiping

All drives are destroyed using NIST 800-88 Rev 2 compliant methods. Your data is permanently erased before any recycling.

4

Certificate Issued

You receive a detailed certificate of destruction listing serial numbers and confirmation of secure wiping for your compliance records.

5

Responsible Recycling

Usable equipment is refurbished and redeployed. Other items are recycled responsibly according to WEEE standards.

Data Destruction: Beyond Just Deleting Files

Not all data destruction methods are equal. We employ certified, industry-standard approaches:

NIST 800-88 Rev 2 Compliant Wiping

Our primary method for modern HDDs is a single-pass overwrite of every addressable sector, which is what NIST Special Publication 800-88 Rev 2 (published September 2025) describes as sufficient "Clear" sanitisation for current drives. For SSDs we use the drive's firmware-level Secure Erase / NVMe Sanitize commands, because wear-levelling means software overwriting cannot reach every flash cell. Every job is audited with a per-device certificate listing the serial number, method and operator.

Physical Destruction

For the highest-risk drives, we arrange physical drilling or industrial shredding through a vetted partner facility. Drives are photographed and certified; the service costs from £12 per drive and is ideal for financial records, legal files, or healthcare data.

Witnessed Destruction: For especially sensitive jobs, we can arrange witnessed destruction at a partner facility, so you or your nominated team member can observe the entire process from collection through certification.

Environmental Responsibility

Basecamp Tech is committed to sustainable IT disposal. Here's what we do:

WEEE Regulation Compliance

All e-waste is processed in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013. This ensures hazardous materials are safely handled and valuable materials are recovered.

Refurbishment Where Possible

Working computers and peripherals are tested, cleaned, and refurbished. We partner with charities and schools across Bristol to donate still-useful equipment. This extends product life, reduces landfill, and helps the community.

Material Recovery

Broken equipment is disassembled. Metals (copper, gold, aluminium), plastics, and glass are separated and sent to appropriate recycling facilities. We track and report on material recovery rates to our clients.

By choosing Basecamp Tech, your old computers don't end up in a landfill or shipped overseas. They're processed responsibly right here in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is computer disposal really free? +
Yes. Our service includes free collection from your Bristol location, secure data destruction, and responsible recycling. There's no hidden cost and no minimum quantity required. We make money by refurbishing usable equipment and recovering valuable materials—not by charging you.
What happens to my data? +
We use NIST 800-88 Rev 2 compliant data destruction — single-pass overwrite for modern HDDs, firmware-level Secure Erase / NVMe Sanitize for SSDs, and physical destruction for the highest-risk drives. Every drive is processed before any recycling takes place. You receive a detailed certificate of destruction listing serial numbers and confirmation of method for your compliance records.
Can I watch the destruction process? +
Yes. For the highest-sensitivity drives we can arrange witnessed destruction at a partner facility, where you or your nominated team member can observe the full process from collection through certification. Physical destruction costs from £12 per drive.
What about monitors and peripherals? +
We collect and recycle all IT equipment—monitors, keyboards, mice, cables, printers, network hardware, and more. Everything is processed responsibly according to WEEE regulations. Old CRT monitors, LCD screens, and even broken peripherals are welcome.
How do I book a collection? +
Contact us via the form below, WhatsApp, email, or phone. We reply within 24 hours and typically schedule collection within 2–5 working days. We'll confirm your location in Bristol, arrange a convenient date, and send you a pre-collection checklist.
