If your Bristol office has old laptops piling up in a storage cupboard — machines that are too outdated to use, replaced with new equipment, or simply taking up space — you're not alone. Most businesses don't know what to do with them: throwing them away is illegal (they contain hazardous materials and regulated electronics), and taking them to a tip is time-consuming. And then there's the question that keeps IT managers awake: is the data really secure?
We've built Basecamp Tech to solve this problem. We collect old laptops from Bristol businesses at no charge, securely destroy the data to NIST 800-88 Rev 2 standards, and recycle the hardware responsibly. No minimum quantity. No hidden fees. Full transparency from collection to certificate.
What Happens to Your Old Laptops?
Understanding the full journey of your old equipment builds confidence. Here's exactly what happens:
We pick up your old laptops from your Bristol location — whether that's Clifton, Temple Meads, Bedminster, or anywhere across the city. No mess, no complexity. We transport them safely in sealed containers.
Every laptop receives a data wipe compliant with NIST Special Publication 800-88 Rev 2 (September 2025): a single-pass overwrite for modern HDDs, and firmware-level Secure Erase / NVMe Sanitize for SSDs. We also offer physical drive destruction (drilling or partner-facility shredding) for machines with highly sensitive historical data.
You receive one certificate per device, showing the serial number, wipe method, timestamp, and operator signature. This satisfies ICO audit requirements and GDPR accountability.
Laptops in good working condition are refurbished for re-use, extending their lifespan. Damaged machines are safely dismantled, with metals, plastics, and hazardous components separated for proper recycling streams.
Why Bristol Businesses Choose Us
Several things set us apart — and they all matter:
Free collection with no minimum. Whether you have 2 laptops or 200, collection costs nothing. Many providers only visit for large quantities; we serve businesses of all sizes.
GDPR destruction certificates per device. Not batch reports — individual certificates with serial numbers and destruction methods. This is what auditors actually want to see.
Digital Waste Tracking ready. Since 1 April 2026, all waste movements must be tracked through the UK Digital Waste Tracking service. We're already set up. Read more about Digital Waste Tracking compliance here.
Bristol-based and local. We're not a national call centre. We know Bristol, we operate here, and we're available for questions on 07429 152365.
Full transparency. You'll know exactly what method was used on each device, who processed it, and when. No black box, no "trust us."
Our Laptop Recycling Process
We handle every machine with the same care and documentation standards. Here's the exact process:
Step 1: Book online or by phone. Tell us how many laptops you have and your preferred collection date. We reply within 24 hours and typically collect within 2–5 working days.
Step 2: Collection. Josh or a trusted collection partner arrives at your Bristol office, checks the condition of each device, and loads them into secure transport containers. Takes about 20–30 minutes depending on quantity.
Step 3: Data destruction. At our processing location, each device is wiped using NIST 800-88 Rev 2 compliant methods — a single-pass overwrite for modern HDDs, and firmware-level Secure Erase / NVMe Sanitize for SSDs. Typical time 15–30 minutes per machine.
Step 4: Certificates generated. We record each wipe (method, serial number, operator, timestamp) and email your PDF certificates directly, typically within 48 hours of processing.
Step 5: Recycling. Machines are assessed for refurbishment or safe dismantling. We separate metals, plastics, and hazardous components (batteries, capacitors) for appropriate recycling streams.
What Laptops Do We Accept?
We recycle laptops of all makes and models, in any condition:
Working and broken machines. If it powers on, great. If the screen is cracked, the battery dead, or the motherboard fried, we still take it.
All manufacturers: Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple MacBook, ASUS, Acer, Toshiba, MSI, and others.
Any age. Vintage machines from the 2000s, recent business models, anything in between.
Water-damaged, dropped, or physically damaged units. Safe component recovery and recycling.
Machines with encrypted drives or bios passwords. We can work with these — just let us know in advance.
Data Security and GDPR Compliance
This is where trust matters most. Every machine in your collection is handled under strict data protection standards:
NIST 800-88 Rev 2 compliant erasure. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) sets the recognised standard for data sanitisation. Our process follows NIST Special Publication 800-88 Rev 2 (published September 2025): for modern HDDs, a single verified overwrite pass of every addressable sector is sufficient for "Clear" sanitisation. For SSDs, software overwriting cannot reach every flash cell because of wear-levelling, so we use the drive's firmware-level Secure Erase / NVMe Sanitize commands instead — this is the method NIST recommends. These are the same standards used by UK government and healthcare organisations.
Individual device certificates. You don't get a batch report saying "30 devices were wiped." You get one certificate per device, showing:
Device make, model, and serial number
Destruction method (erasure or physical destruction)
Date and time of destruction
Operator name and signature
Hash verification of the erasure process
Physical destruction option. If you have laptops with historical data (old financial records, client information, etc.), we offer physical drive destruction: shredding the hard drive into fragments too small to recover. This leaves zero room for data recovery—ever.
Chain of custody. From collection to processing to certificate, every step is documented. You know who handled your data, when, and what happened to it.
The ICO's guidance on data subject rights and accountability (Article 5, GDPR) requires that organisations can demonstrate how data was destroyed. Our per-device certificates do exactly that. When an auditor or regulator asks "show me proof this data was destroyed securely," you have a document that satisfies that requirement.
